Electric Racing Aircraft

What would high-tech electric racing airplanes look like in the near-future? With battery technology getting better and more powerful electric motors being placed in many different types of vehicles, we could see a Formula 1 style racing series dedicated to these types of aircraft. The Aerowave AE-101 Electric Racer is a single-seat, twin-engine craft made from light weight carbon composites and honey-comb reinforced structures. It can reach a maximum speed of 137 mph in level flight and is considered a very agile plane when compared to the competition.

Preliminary exploration sketches of the airframe, engines and cockpit setup. I had originally explored a twin-boom design with an engine on each boom (similar to the revered P-38 Lightning from WWII) but ultimately decided that a teardrop cockpit to single tail setup was more streamlined and fit the design brief I had set for myself.
